An astronomer used to go out at night to observe the stars. One evening, as he wandered through the suburbs with his whole attention fixed on the sky, he fell accidentally into a deep well. A man wished to purchase an Ass, and agreed with its owner that he should try out the animal before he bought him. He took the Ass home and put him in the stable with his other Asses, upon which the new animal left all the others and immediately chose a place next to the laziest and greediest beast.

Seeing this, the man put a halter on him and led him back to his owner. On being asked how, in so short a time, he could have made a trial of him, he answered, “I do not need a trial; I know that he will be just the same as the one he chose for his companion.”

Grow your way forward, through the triumphs and the setbacks. Persist, and anything is within your reach.

The consumer marketplace encourages us to live by a utilitarian calculus, to satisfy our desires and lose sight of the moral stakes involved in everyday decisions. The noise of fast and shallow communications makes it harder to hear the quieter sounds that emanate from the depths.

We live in a culture that teaches us to promote and advertise ourselves and to master the skills required for success, but that gives little encouragement to humility, sympathy, and honest self-confrontation, which are necessary for building character.

With this bomb we have now added a new and revolutionary increase in destruction to supplement the growing power of our armed forces. In their present form these bombs are now in production and even more powerful forms are in development.

The History of Slavery In America

Slavery is a system of forced labor that has existed throughout the world for thousands of years. In America, slavery began in the 17th century when people in Africa were overpowered and forced to leave their native land, their culture and their families behind.

By 1860, there would be 4 million African slaves in the United States. This enormous population of slaves was owned by a small group of the wealthiest and most powerful whites in American society. As African slaves toiled in the fields, laws were created to enforce their low-status. They were prohibited from participating in lawsuits, from owning property of firearms, and from possessing alcohol. Most states did not recognize slave marriages and often prohibited slaves from learning to read and write.

Bottlenose Dolphins

This is the coast of Florida. Here, strange scars on the sea bed hint at one animal’s remarkable strategy.

These are bottlenose dolphins, one of the most intelligent animals on Earth. Their prey is very elusive, fast-swimming fish. But the dolphins have invented a completely new way of hunting. By beating its tail down hard, this dolphin stirs up the shallow silt. And by swimming in a tight circle, it creates a ring of mushrooming mud around a shoal of fish. The contracting ring traps the fish just like a net. Panicked, the fish jump to escape, right into the open mouths of the waiting dolphins. Again and again, the lead dolphin creates a circle before they all line up with perfect timing.

These dolphins are the only ones known to have developed this hunting behavior, and it gives them an edge.

Jesus Christ Lizard

Reptiles and amphibians must warm their bodies before they can become active, and until then they are slow-moving and vulnerable. The quickest way to gain heat is to bask in the sun, as this basilisk lizard from Central America is doing. The trouble is that exposing yourself inevitably makes you easily seen. But a conspicuous perch over a river like this seems to be making yourself unnecessarily prominent.

This basilisk’s greatest threat comes from the sky. Dark shapes overhead make it nervous. A hunting bird might expect it to flee to the trees. In fact, it does the opposite. This skitter across the surface of the water earns it precious seconds and the nickname: Jesus Christ Lizard. It drives its feet down so hard and so fast that it never sinks deeper than a few inches. A human would need to run at 65 miles an hour to do this.

Chameleon

One of the most bizarre of all reptiles hunts insects here in Madagascar. The praying mantis has a 360-degree vision, but it hasn’t seen the danger that is now approaching. A panther chameleon. Every part of its body has become specialised for a life of stealth among the branches. Its toes have become grasping pincers. Its eyes rotate so it can look in all directions. Its skin can change color for camouflage or to signal emotions.

The chameleon body is concealed from both predator and prey, so it can launch a surprise attack. The tongue is like a missile, aimed at its prey’s head to neutralise its defences. Chameleons, in short, are so perfectly adapted to a life spent hunting in trees that it’s hard to imagine how they could live anywhere else.

The Venus Flytrap

The Venus flytrap. Like the sundew, it makes itself very attractive, oozing nectar across the brim of each leaf. But any visiting insect had better watch out for these six tiny hairs.

This fly has to tread carefully. If it strikes one hair, it can carry on feeding but a timer has been set. A second strike in less than 20 seconds and the fly is doomed. An electrical impulse is triggered and the leaf snaps shut in just a fraction of a second. The tips lock together like prison bars. If the fly is very big or very small, it may just manage to escape. But most are trapped and die.

Ten days later, the trap reopens. All that remains is a husk. The plant has finished its meal and resets itself for its next victim.

Christianity (1)

Christianity is a monotheistic religion that centers on the teachings of Jesus Christ believed to be the son of an almighty Universal God. It is through faith in Jesus Christ and his teachings that believers have access to God and afterlife.

The Gospels hold that Jesus was born in the first decade BC in the region of Judea. According to tradition, Jesus was immaculately conceived by God. In some accounts, Jesus had been trained as a carpenter or a builder. But by the age of 30, he took to preaching, saying that forgiveness of past sins was the key to achieving righteousness.

However, the Jewish religious leaders and Roman rulers of the region declared Jesus an agitator. They had him arrested and crucified, nailed to a wooden cross and left to die. But the story of Jesus doesn't end with his death. According to the Gospels, the body of Jesus was resurrected by God, his father.

Earthlings (Excerpt)

Euthanasia, generally defined as the act of killing painlessly for reasons of mercy, is usually administered by an injection in the leg for dogs and sometimes in the stomach for cats. It is a quick and painless procedure for the animals and by far the most humane, but not always the most affordable.

Due to the increase of euthanasia in shelters and the growing, constant demand for drugs like Euthasol, some shelters with budget constraints are forced to use gas chambers instead. In a gas chamber, animals are packed very tightly and can take as long as 20 minutes to die. It is, by far, less merciful, more traumatic and painful. But the procedure is less expensive.

Perhaps some of the tough questions we should ask ourselves about animals that we keep as companions are: can we keep animals as companions and still address their needs? Is our keeping companion animals in their best interest, or are we exploiting them? The answers to these questions may lie in the attitudes of the human caretakers and their abilities to provide suitable environments for companion animals.

Michelangelo - Artist and Man (2)

Despite his artistic success in Rome, the ever-restless Michelangelo soon returned to his home in Florence, where he received the greatest challenge of his early careerhe was commissioned by the Florentine Office of Works to carve a statue out of a huge block of marble that had been badly damaged by an earlier artist 35 years before.

Michelangelo had an almost mystical belief that the figures he carved already existed fully formed within the blocks of stone he worked. By studying the raw marble, examining its patterns of fissures and veins, he could sense where the figure slept. Then, layer by layer, blow by blow, he would liberate his creation from its rocky prison. Isolating himself with the enormous piece of marble, Michelangelo chipped and hammered away, letting no one but his few assistants observe his progress. After four years of back-breaking labor, he finally unveiled his giant sculpture. Standing over 14 feet tall, the Magnificent David was a towering achievement both literally and figuratively. From the moment that David was revealed, Michelangelo was hailed as one of the greatest sculptors who ever lived.

In 1508, Julius gave Michelangelo the most challenging assignment of his lifeto paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The nearly 6,000 square-foot ceiling was an enormous undertaking. And over the next four years, Michelangelo would labor to the point of exhaustion on the project. A different artist might have decided to rush through the commission, doing just enough to get by so he could return to work of his own choosing. But once he knew he could not escape the ceiling, Michelangelo became determined to create images that would confirm his lofty vision of his own talents and do justice to the glory of God.

Standing, not lying as legend would have it for hours at a time on a scaffolding 70 feet in the air was a grueling physical trial. Finally, on November 1st, 1512, Michelangelo's creation was revealed to the world. The result was miraculous. In an unparalleled display of physical effort and artistic skill, the surface of the ceiling had been covered with 33 panels, containing more than 300 painted figures. Michelangelo Buonarroti had sacrificed four years of his life for art, and in the process, brought art to life. Against his will, the greatest sculptor of the age had become the greatest painter as well. At the age of 37, he was hailed by his contemporaries asthe Divine Michelangelo”.

I have always wondered at the passion many people have to meet the celebrated. The prestige you acquire by being able to tell your friends that you know famous men proves only that you are yourself of small account. The celebrated develop a technique to deal with the persons they come across. They show the world a mask, often an impressive one, but take care to conceal their real selves. They play the part that is expected from them, and with practice learn to play it very well, but you are stupid if you think that this public performance of theirs corresponds with the man within.

I have been more concerned with the obscure than with the famous. They are more often themselves. They have had no need to create a figure to protect themselves from the world or to impress it. Their idiosyncrasies have had more chance to develop in the limited circle of their activity, and since they have never been in the public eye it has never occurred to them that they have anything to conceal. They display their oddities because it has never struck them that they are odd.

The great man is too often all of a piece; it is the little man that is a bundle of contradictory elements. He is inexhaustible. You never come to the end of the surprises he has in store for you. For my part I would much sooner spend a month on a desert island with a veterinary surgeon than with a prime minister.

In stories the doomed hero is usually saved at the last minute by some stroke of fortune, but almost always his sense of values is changed. He becomes more appreciative of the meaning of life and its permanent spiritual values. It has often been noted that those who live, or have lived, in the shadow of death bring a mellow sweetness to everything they do.

Most of us, however, take life for granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty tasks, hardly aware of our listless attitude toward life.

The same lethargy, I am afraid, characterizes the use of all our faculties and senses. Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight. Particularly does this observation apply to those who have lost sight and hearing in adult life. But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties. Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sounds hazily, without concentration and with little appreciation. It is the same old story of not being grateful for what we have until we lose it, of not being conscious of health until we are ill.

I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound.

You can heal your marriage and recreate a stronger LOVE than you ever thought possible. You can become the best parent possible at ANY ageeven 86, but don’t WAIT until thenYou’ll always be able to make more money, BUT you CANNOT make more time.

Youth

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite for what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20; but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and Brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well-trained, well-equipped, and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Titanic (1)

The turn of the 20th century saw a golden age of Industry and prosperity in many western countries. One aspect of this era came to epitomize its grandeur and ultimately its downfall: the Titanic.

Commissioned by the British shipping companyWhite Star Line”, the Titanic was created to satiate demand for luxury travel between Europe and North America. The ship's construction began in March 1909 in Belfast Ireland. By the time it was sent to England for provisions, Titanic was one of the largest ships of its time. It was about 92 feet wide and 882.5 feet longthe length of nearly 3 football fields. With a height of about 175 feet, the ship above water was taller than most buildings. The Titanic also included new safety features, such as 16 compartments designed to prevent the hull from flooding. This caused many to believe that the ship was unsinkable. Such confidence led to the unfortunate decision to cut the number of lifeboats on board in half in order to make the deck look clean and elegant.

On April 10, 1912, Titanic left port in Southampton, England, and embarked on its first and last voyage. It first stopped over in France and Ireland, and by the time it set out on the long stretch of sea toward New York City, it had about 2,200 people on board. Unbeknownst to all, misfortune would arise just a few days into their voyage.

Titanic (2)

On April 14, at approximately 9:40 and 10:55 p.m., warnings were sent to the Titanic's radio operators of ice fields, but they were never relayed to the bridge. At about 11:40 p.m., nearly 500 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, lookout crew on the Titanic spotted an iceberg in the ship's path and sent word to the bridge, but it was too late. The iceberg grazed the right side of the ship, causing its compartmentsoriginally deemed watertightto fill with water. Titanic's radio operators began sending out distress signals. At 12:20 a.m., one signal reached the ship Carpathia, which began making its way to the Titanic at maximum speed. Around the same time, crew began loading women and children into the few lifeboats on board. In addition to the shortage of lifeboats, some of the ones used were not being filled to capacity, stranding even more people on the sinking ship. For the next two hours, the front compartments of the Titanic filled with water, causing the bow to sink, and the stern to rise out of the water. At around 2:18 a.m., the ship snapped into twothe bow sank first, followed by the stern a couple minutes later. Those who went down with the ship were left in the freezing waters. Over an hour later, at about 3:30 a.m., the Carpathia arrived to pick up passengers. Of the 2,200 people on the Titanic, only 705 survived.

Soon after the disaster, both the United States and Great Britain conducted investigations and developed new safety measures for ships. They required ships to maintain a 24-hour radio watch, and have enough lifeboats for all on board. They also helped establishThe International Ice Patrol”, which monitors icebergs in the North Atlantic and warns ships of potential dangers.

Cancer

Today, cancer causes one in every seven deaths worldwide. But how does cancer start? And what is being done to combat it?

Our bodies contain trillions of highly specialized cells, and each carries genes responsible for regulating cell growth and division. But when a genetic change disrupts this process, cells begin to grow and divide uncontrollably, thereby becoming cancer. The genetic changes that cause cancer usually happen in three types of genes: Proto-oncogenes, which signal a cell to grow and divide; Tumor Suppressor Genes, which signal a cell to stop dividing; and DNA Repair Genes, which preserve and maintain genetic codes. Changes in these genes lead to abnormal cell growth, resulting in masses of tissues called Tumors. Tumors may be benign, meaning that they remain in one area; or malignant, which means that they are capable of spreading. Through a process called Metastasis, a malignant tumor’s cells will eventually break off, travel throughout the body, and begin forming tumors in other regions. When this happens the cancer has become metastatic and is most dangerous.

The cause of cancer is still a mystery. Inherited traits may be behind some of the genetic changes that lead to the formation of cancerous cells, and so might environmental exposures, such as excessive radiation from the sun, or chemicals and cigarette smoke. In the United States today, roughly 1/3 of all people will eventually develop cancer. Of the over 100 different types of cancer, Breast Cancer is currently the most prevalent type, and Lung Cancer causes the most deaths.

But our ability to fight cancer is improving. Since just the 1990s, cancer mortality rates have dropped more than 26 percent in the US, and more than 2 million lives have been saved. As treatments and methods of early detection improve, and doctors, scientists, and the public better understand cancer, hope remains in the fight against the disease.

AIDS

About 37 million people around the world are currently living with AIDS, making the disease one of the worst pandemics in modern history.

AIDSor Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndromeis a disease in which the human immune system is severely impaired. It's caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virusor HIVand is the last stage of the virus’s infection. HIV attacks by entering the bloodstream and attaches to Helper T or CD4 cells. A type of white blood cell, CD4 cells are responsible for fighting infections. First, HIV attaches itself to a CD4 cell and fuses with it. Then, HIV releases its genetic material into the CD4 cell, which combines with the cell’s DNA. This allows the virus to produce more HIV proteins inside the cell. The proteins are then packaged and released to attack other CD4 cells. Without HIV medicines, an individual's infection may spread, and within 10 to 12 years, advance to become AIDS. This decreased immunity makes patients with AIDS vulnerable to a number of diseases, including infections, dementia, and cancer.

Scientists believed that HIV originated in west central Africa, where a similar virus was found in chimpanzees and gorillas. Around the turn of the 20th century, the virus was transmitted to humans due to the handling of chimpanzee meat. The virus then spread from the African continent during the mid 1960s through a single carrier, eventually making its way around the world. In 1982, scientists labeled the illness as AIDS, and the following year identified the virus as HIV. Ever since, about 77.3 million people around the world have contracted HIV, with the majority of affected individuals living in countries with very few resources.

Scientists are working to one day develop a cure for AIDS. In the meantime, advancements in biotechnology plus increased awareness, prevention, and access to health care are saving many lives, and may hold the key to finally exterminating the disease.

But in fact they are invari­ably the beneficiaries of hidden advantages and extraordi­nary opportunities and cultural legacies that allow them to learn and work hard and make sense of the world in a way others cannot. It makes a difference where and when we grew up. The culture we belong to and the legacies passed down by our forebears shape the patterns of our achieve­ment in ways we cannot begin to imagine. It's not enough to ask what successful people are like, in other words. It is only by asking where they are from that we can unravel the logic behind who succeeds and who doesn't.

Biologists often talk about the "ecology" of an organ­ism: the tallest oak in the forest is not just the tallest because it grew from the hardiest acorn; it is also the tallest because no other trees blocked its sunlight, because the soil around it was deep and rich, because no rabbit chewed through its bark as a sapling, and because no lumberjack cut it down before it matured. We all know that successful people come from hardy seeds. But do we know enough about the sunlight that warmed them, the soil in which they put down their roots, and the rabbits and lumberjacks they were lucky enough to avoid?

For almost a generation, psychologists around the world have been engaged in a spirited debate over a question that most of us would have considered settled years ago. The question is this: is there such a thing as innate talent? The obvious answer is yes. Achievement is tal­ent plus preparation. The problem with this view, though, is that the closer psychologists look at the careers of the gifted, the smaller the role innate talent seems to play and the bigger the role preparation seems to play.

Exhibit A in this argument is a study done in the early 1990s by the psychologist K. Anders Ericsson and two colleagues at Berlin's elite Academy of Music. The thing about Ericsson's study is that he and his colleagues couldn't find any "naturals", musicians who floated effortlessly to the top while practicing a frac­tion of the time their peers did. Nor could they find any "grinds", people who worked harder than everyone else, yet just didn't have what it takes to break into the top ranks. Their research suggested that once you have enough ability to get into a top music school, the thing that distinguishes one performer from another is how hard he or she works. That's it. And what's more, the people at the very top don't just work much harder than everyone else. They work much, much harder.

This idea that excellence at a complex task requires a critical minimum level of practice surfaces again and again in studies of expertise. The emerging picture from such studies is that ten thousand hours of practice is required to achieve the level of mastery associated with being a world-class expertin anything.

Since the rise of capitalism, it has been known that capturing someone’s attention could cause him to part with some money. From the 1890s through the 1920s, there arose the first means for harvesting attention on a mass scale and directing it for commercial effect, thanks to what is now familiar to us in many forms under the name of advertising. At its inception it was as transformative as the cotton gin. For advertising was the conversion engine that, with astonishing efficiency, turned the cash crop of attention into an industrial commodity. As such, attention could be not only used but resold.

We’ve already seen the attention merchant’s basic modus operandi: draw attention with apparently free stuff and then resell it. But a consequence of that model is a total dependence on gaining and holding attention. This means that under competition, the race will naturally run to the bottom; attention will almost invariably gravitate to the more garish, lurid, outrageous alternative, whatever stimulus may more likely engage what cognitive scientists call ourautomaticattention as opposed to ourcontrolledattention, the kind we direct with intent. The race to a bottomless bottom, appealing to what one might call the audience’s baser instincts, poses a fundamental, continual dilemma for the attention merchantjust how far will he go to get his harvest? If the history of attention capture teaches us anything, it is that the limits are often theoretical, and when real, rarely self-imposed.

Have you ever found yourself speaking to someone at length only to realize they haven’t heard a single thing you’ve said? As remarkable as our ability to see or hear is our capacity to disregard. This capacity, along with the inherent need to pay attention to something at any given moment, has dictated the development of the attention industries.

We ignore so much stuff for a simple reason: if we didn’t, we’d quickly be overwhelmed, our brains flooded until they seized up. Depending on the kind of information, it takes our brains some amount of time to process it, and when we are presented with too much at once we begin to panic, like a waiter who has too many orders shouted at him at once.

But our capacity to ignore is limited by another fact: we are always paying attention to something. If we think of attention as a resource, or even a kind of currency, we must allow that it is always, necessarily, beingspent”. There is no saving it for later. The question is always, what shall I pay attention to? Our brains answer this question with varying degrees of volition, fromshhhI’m reading thisto letting our minds wander in the direction of whatever might draw it in, whether in the corner of our screen or along some road we are walking. That is where the attention merchant makes his opportunity. But to succeed he must motivate us to withdraw our attention from where it is and surrender it to something else. It needn’t be a thoughtful calculation.

I confess that when first I made acquaintance with Charles Strickland I never for a moment discerned that there was in him anything out of the ordinary. Yet now few will be found to deny his greatness. I do not speak of that greatness which is achieved by the fortunate politician or the successful soldier; that is a quality which belongs to the place he occupies rather than to the man; and a change of circumstances reduces it to very discreet proportions. 如果不是毛姆写的《月亮和六便士》,我估计没有几个人会记住保罗·高更(Paul Gauguin)这个名字。现实生活中的高更,有着原本令无数普通人羡慕的生活,他拥有着体面的工作,他的妻子是丹麦工业大亨的女儿,并且两个人一起拥有着五个可爱的孩子。但是,就是这样一个人,在38岁那年,却选择了与家人断绝关系,独自一人到一座小岛上开始潜心绘画,追寻自己内心深处那片原始的净土。

就像毛姆笔下写的那样:在他的灵魂中深深埋藏着某种创作的欲望,这种欲望尽管为他的生活环境掩盖着,却一直在毫不留情地膨胀壮大,正象肿瘤在有机组织中不断长大一样,直到最后完全把他控制住,逼得他必须采取行动,毫无反抗的能力。

在现实生活里,高更是一个极其自私的人,他的眼里没有相守一生的爱情,为了绘画,他可以一次次地抛弃自己生命当中的女人;高更也是一个自讨苦吃的人,明明有着别人眼中很优越的现代生活,他却果断地选择改变自己的人生轨迹,跑到大自然里和一群当地的土著居民共度余生。

但是,高更也是一个才华横溢、天赋异禀的绘画巨匠,在贫穷和疾病的困扰之下,服毒自杀却被人救起,一生最痛苦的时刻,他也创造出了那副惊世巨作:《我们从何处来?我们是谁?我们向何处去?》

Vincent van Gogh - Lust for Life

I have a more or less irresistible passion for books, and I have a need continually to educate myself, to study, if you like, precisely as I need to eat my bread. When I was in different surroundings, in surroundings of paintings and works of art, you well know that I then took a violent passion for those surroundings that went as far as enthusiasm. And I don’t repent it. And now, far from the country again, I often feel homesick for the country of paintings.

Now I no longer have those surroundingshowever, that something that’s called soul, they claim that it never dies and that it lives for ever and seeks for ever and for ever and for evermore.

It’s true that I’ve lost several people’s trust; it’s true that my financial affairs are in a sorry state; it’s true that the future’s not a little dark; it’s true that I could have done better; it’s true that just in terms of earning my living I’ve lost timeand that I lack more, infinitely more than I have. But is that called going downhill, and is that called doing nothing? But on the road that I’m on I must continue

One of the reasons why I’m now without a position, why I’ve been without a position for years, it’s quite simply because I have different ideas from these gentlemen who give positions to individuals who think like them. It’s not a simple matter of appearance, as people have hypocritically held it against me, it’s something more serious than that, I assure you.

Someone has a great fire in his soul and nobody ever comes to warm themselves at it, and passers-by see nothing but a little smoke at the top of the chimney and then go on their way. So now what are we to do? Keep this fire alive inside, have salt in ourselves, wait patiently. But with how much impatience, await the hour? I say, when whoever wants to, will come and sit down there, will stay there. For all I know? May whoever believes in God await the hour, which will come sooner or later.


文森特·梵高:渴望生活

我对书,谈得上是非常喜爱。我一直觉得我应该不断充实自己,不断学习,这种需求就如我需要吃面包一样,不可或缺。你知道,我之前所在的那种环境,周围都是画作和艺术品,我疯狂地喜爱着它们,这喜爱甚至变成了迷恋。我一点儿都不后悔。如今,我又身处异乡,我常常想念那个绘画的的国度。

现在,我已经没有了那样的环境——但那个被世人称为灵魂的东西,是永不消亡,永远留存的。它会不断地追寻,永不停歇。

没错,我是失去了一些人的信任;没错,我的经济状况很糟糕;没错,未来看起来非常渺茫;没错,我本来可以过得更好;没错,为了谋生,我浪费了很多创作的时间……没错,我失去的远远比我拥有的多得多。但是,这难道就能叫走下坡路?这难道就是无所事事?但是不管怎样,我还是要继续走自己的路……

我为什么没有地位,为什么那么多年来我都默默无闻,其实原因很简单,因为我跟那些给别人地位的先生们(主流画家们),意见相左。那些获得地位的人,往往跟这些先生们是一路人。虽然人们假惺惺地说,他们讨厌我仅仅是因为我的外表,但我向你保证,这背后有着更深刻的原因。

有些人内心当中藏着一把火,但从来没有人过来取暖,路人只能看到烟囱里冒出的一缕轻烟,都不予理会,继续赶路。我们应该怎样守护内心的这把火呢?在内心当中保持这把火的生命力,不忘初心,耐心等待。但等待那一刻的过程中,天知道到底会有多焦急?我只想说,最终总会有人想要靠近,坐下,取暖。但愿所有信奉上帝的人都能继续等待,那一刻迟早要到来。
